WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — It wasn’t quite a storybook ending. West Virginia’s players failed to put retiring coach Randy Mazey on their shoulders and celebrate a trip to the College World Series for the first time in program history. But Mazey’s final run was still magical, and when it ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional — so close to the promised land of Omaha — the Mountaineers celebrated their outgoing coach and celebrated each other, with tears and bittersweet smiles.
