Fans and promoters say Devin Haney needs to get busy with his career and stop sitting on the bench regrouping after his loss last April. He lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia in an upset on April 20 in Brooklyn. That defeat seems to have taken something away from the former two-division world champion.
A year apart
Bill Haney said this week that he has “big news” coming for Devin’s next fight, but he didn’t give any hints about who it might be or what weight class. If Devin moves up to 147, he could fight for a world title against WBC champion Mario Barrios or WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis.
IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is interested in fighting those guys, but has been too slow to make the fights happen. Bill would move quickly to make them happen if that’s where he wants Devin to go.
Promoter Eddie Hearn believes it is important for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) to return to action, noting that he will have been out of the ring for almost a year when he returns.
That’s not a good thing for the 26-year-old former two-division world champion Haney to do if he wants to stay strong. Haney is losing a lot of money by staying out of the ring, and he could have already defended against Sandor Martin and fought IBF champion Liam Paro in a unification.
“He needs to move”
“Let’s see what Devin does next. As far as I’m concerned, I think he needs to move. He fought in April. It’s December now. He won’t fight in January. He’ll be out for almost a year when all is said and done,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV regarding Devin Haney’s inactivity following his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20. “I would love to see Devin back in the ring. I think that he has an extraordinary talent.”
