Munguia will have an easy fight tonight against Surace (25-0-2, 4 KOs). None of the four sanctioning bodies places Surace in the top 15. The reason is obvious: Surace’s opposition has been poor.
It’s unclear why Top Rank chose this opponent for Munguia rather than a top-tier contender. If the idea is to make Munguia look great and make sure he doesn’t get beaten by anyone to ruin his chances of a rematch with Canelo, pairing him with fighters like Surace and Bazinyan makes sense.
Ideally, Munguia should show some courage by facing top contenders at 168 to speed up the process of rematching Canelo, but he is too vulnerable to do so. Munguia didn’t make a good impression even in his last match against Bazinyan.
If Munguia was ambitious and willing to take a risk, he would face these guys to earn a rematch with Alvarez:

Munguia is not expected to fight any of these fighters. It’s business. His next fight will likely be against Edgar Berlanga, who he has said he is interested in fighting. Berlanga is just as talented as Bazinyan and is an easy target for Munguia or any of the fighters on the list.
