Today’s mail bag arrives where Corbin Burnes it could go, because we write about the players’ salaries, if Juan Soto will they give up, how the Brewers might fix their outfield, the chances of the Dodgers signing various free agents and what’s next for the A’s.

Why isn’t there even a hint that the Mets have interest in Corbin Burnes? If they were willing to pay dinosaurs like Scherzer and Verlander, why not pay Burnes? Otherwise they will lose a lot of 7-5 games.

David Stearns was the Brewers’ GM when the team drafted Burnes in the fourth round out of Saint Mary’s College of California in 2016. Given that the Mets needed three starters this winter, it was natural to expect Stearns to be interested. While that’s true, Stearns earned $15.5 million as a free agent with the Brewers (Jhoulys Chacin in 2016), it’s also true that the Mets have a lot more money than the Brewers.

Even a comparison to Stearns’ 2023-24 offseason wouldn’t be fair, because that was, as my colleague Darragh McDonald wrote, “a bridge year of sorts.” Hence the relatively affordable additions of Sean Manaea, Luis SeverinoAND Adrian Houser.

To date, the Mets have made the decision to sign based on ownership Juan Soto to a record-breaking contract, while Stearns added Clay Holmes AND Frankie Montas on two-year deals (if Holmes uses his waiver) to help fill out the rotation. Kodai Senga barely launched this year, and David PetersonHis 21 starts equaled his career high. Paul Blackburn He’s a twist-back guy who has battled injuries, including back surgery in October. The rotation lacks reliability, which would likely be fixed by Burnes.

Stearns seems more interested in the trade market lately, showing interest Garrett crochet AND Luis Castello this month. Speculatively, they could go after them Dylan Cease Also. On December 7, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic wrote that the Mets were interested in Manaea, Nathan Eovaldi, Walker Buehler, Jack FlahertyAND Nick Pivetta. At the time, Newsday’s Tim Healey wrote that the Mets disagreed Massimo Fritto and Burnes is not expected to land. It would appear that Stearns simply doesn’t like the return on investment of huge pitching contracts (at least for players available this winter) and doesn’t want to spend $250 million+ on Burnes.
