Haney: ‘Remembering faces’ after losing Garcia

Devin Haney posted an Instagram post today, telling his followers that he is “working in silence” and “remembering the faces” of his “doubters.” This bitter message signals that Haney was brooding over his loss to Ryan Garcia and wants to show people how wrong they were about him.

The humiliating defeat must be hard to stomach for former two-division world champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) because he is reliving in his head the memory of the three times he was knocked out by Kingry’s left hook on April 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It must be like a grainy old movie in Devin’s head, and he probably wishes he had done things differently. Haney’s isolating behavior is a classic example of the shame response to someone who has failed. It could help Haney if he could come back stronger, improved and ready to avenge his loss.

Blame game

“Absolutely. Whatever happened, he’s not going to go away like Ryan gave up against Tank Davis. So, he’s known as a quitter,” Bill Haney said at Danza Project, talking about Devin not giving up during his fight against Ryan Garcia. “Devin is a warrior.

“It was a combination of Devin not being Devin and him trying to be what the fans wanted to see,” Bill said on why Haney lost to Garcia. “Until then they said he had no heart and wouldn’t stay in the middle of the ring.

“Him [Haney] he was in the center of the ring with someone we hadn’t considered, Ostarine. We didn’t anticipate that it would be much stronger. One thing about Ostarine is that it helps in recovery. Helps in strength and power. All these things,” Bill said on why Devin lost to Kingry.

The reason Devin lost the fight was not because he was in the “center of the ring” against Garcia. Where Haney lost the fight was his habit of winning without stopping, which put him in the line of fire of Ryan’s short left hook.

That was where Devin was eating the shots. He was reaching or pulling back with his clinching, and that made it easy for Kingry to catch with the short-control left hook he likes to throw. If Devin’s training team had known what they were doing, they would have warned him not to hold back so much because that style was tailor-made for Garcia.

It may have worked for Haney in his fights against George Kambosos Jr, Regis Prograis and Jorge Linares, but using the same strategy against Garcia was stupid. That’s why he lost. How could Bill not know this?

Wasted time

“A great injustice has been done to a wonderful guy who did nothing but good business. The fans are the ones who buy the pay-per-view. You want to please them. Devin wants to please his games to go out and fight like that. It wasn’t a winning game plan, but I can still support my guy 1000% because he went into battle. He entered there like a warrior. He came out and I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Bill said of Devin.

What is concerning is how long Haney will be out of the ring following his loss to Ryan. All this energy put into the cause may not pay off for Haney, who is wasting time in his career and may not be worth it in the end. It’s unclear whether Bill is leading the trial, but it’s not a good thing for Devin if he loses a year of his career waiting for the lawsuit to come to an end.
