Benavidez calls for a clean fight with Morrell

David Benavidez says David Morrell complained about drug testing for their Feb. 1 meeting and believes he doesn’t want to be tested by VADA.

Interim WBA light heavyweight champion Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is suspicious, saying WBA “regular” champion Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) might be worried that “something might happen” in one of the his tests.

Benavidez plays the PED card

Some fans see Benavidez’s complaints as he builds the first foundation for a Sorry PED in advance to blame a potential loss for Morrell on potential steroid use.

Only if Benaivdez mentions steroids in the build-up will people view a Morrell win with suspicion. Morrell wouldn’t even have to test positive for PEDs for people to believe he was using due to the association of steroids with his name during preparation.

Benavidez would receive less criticism from fans, and his stock wouldn’t decline so badly if they believed Morrell was dirty. It wouldn’t matter that Morrell never tested positive for a steroid. The fact that Benavidez mentioned it in interviews would make people believe that Morrell was using PEDS and that would ruin his victory.

“When he fought, look at the people he fought. They said they did VADA and they didn’t force David Morrell to do VADA,” David Benavidez told MillCity Boxing. “There were two different fighters that did it.

“He tried to do the same bullshit to me because we’re 13 weeks into the game. When I fought Caleb Plant, we had started testing after 14 weeks. Boo Boo Andrade is 14 weeks away. How is this boy? [Morrell] he’s about to face his biggest fight ever, he doesn’t have to undergo VADA and he’s already accused of steroid use.

“I’m not saying he’s taking steroids or anything like that, but once you’re not trying to take the VADA test, shit seems a little weird. Also, he’s saying he’s a lab rat because he’s taking the test. That’s what it is. This is clean boxing. We are doing VADA every week or every two weeks.

It would be best if Benavidez didn’t discuss PEDs before the fight because it seems like he’s already planning an excuse if things don’t work in his favor in the fight with Morrell.

“If you don’t like it, you’re probably doing something, or you’re probably a little worried that something might come out of these VADA tests,” Benavidez said. I have been tested more than anyone else in VADA, and these are the facts. I have taken the test over 30 times and have never complained. I never said I was a lab rat.

“This guy [Morrell] he’s barely taken the test three times and says he’s a lab rat. Go see the fights and look at the people accusing him. I have never been accused of taking steroids. Then when you saw the press conference, as soon as I said, “Steroids, you guys don’t want to get tested,” that’s when Luis DeCubas stood up and started talking bullshit. Then they left.

“So I don’t know. Guys, be the judge of this one. I’m pointing things out, but you guys won’t make fun of me like I’m an idiot. If there is VADA testing, then let’s do it and let’s be clean boxing,” Benavidez said.
