Demetrius Andrade warns Canelo Alvarez to avoid his former conqueror, David Benavidez, after losing to him by sixth-round stoppage in 2023. Andrade thinks Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is too big and throws too many combinations for Canelo he can defeat him.

It’s understandable why Demetrius is trying to make Benavidez look invincible because that lessens the impact of his loss to him. He suffered a major blow in that fight, suffering his first career defeat. So, he’s trying to protect his ego by making Benavidez look like an exceptional talent when he really isn’t.

Benavidez’s next opponent

We saw this in his fight against the 37-year-old Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th. Gvozdyk had just come out of a four-year retirement and had beaten Benavidez, putting all kinds of lumps in his face.

Canelo hasn’t said he wants to fight “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez, and the two fighters now compete in different weight classes. Benavidez, 28, is fighting at light heavyweight and will challenge the WBA regular 175-pound champion David Morrell in 33 days on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

If Benavidez loses that fight by knockout, he could return to the 168-pound division if he can still make weight. There would be no point in him staying at 175 if Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) destroyed him. Morrell is as big as Benavidez but faster, hits harder, is younger and has better technical skills.

There’s a good chance Morrell wins that fight and takes care of Canelo’s problem permanently, not that he needs help. Andrade, 36, may be impressed with Benavidez’s offensive skills, but he is no knockout puncher. He couldn’t even stop Caleb Plant.

The only reason he stopped Andrade is his size and youth advantage. He was 26 years old when he defeated Demetrius last year on November 25.

Don’t do it!

“I don’t think Canelo is beating David [Benavidez]. I don’t blame him for not fighting David. Canelo, stay away from David. Don’t do it,” Demetrius Andrade told Fight Hub TV. “I’m taller and longer than Canelo. I don’t know if Canelo [can beat Benavidez]. He’s a big boy.

“You have to have the right skills, movement, IQ, sharpness to beat David, unless David fights the next bigger man at 175, it will be a different story. But at 168, that’s what you have to be to beat him.

“Canelo is smaller than me and I was able to push David around for a few rounds and do what I need to do whatever. But that weight and length, and he knows how to throw punches in bunches, will be a difficult task for Canelo.

“David is not someone who will let you go either. Canelo can’t beat him,” Andrade said of his belief that Benavidez cannot be beaten by Alvarez.

Canelo was going to fight Benavidez before, but he talked so much trash and came off as needy. The way Benavidez seems fixated on Alvarez is scary, almost like a stalker. For any popular fighter that anyone seemed so obsessed with the way Benavidez came across, they would ignore him too.
