Morrell vs. Benavidez too late and senseless

Since the announcement of David Morrell and David Benavidez meeting on February 1st, the question has been: why at this weight? The winner of this fight will likely never be able to defeat Artur Beterbiev, let alone Dmitry Bivol, at light heavyweight.

Even though Bivol and Beterbiev’s ages are closer to 40, I don’t think Morrell and Benavidez can defeat either Russian. In my opinion, the logical thing was to have that super middleweight fight between them, and the winner put him ahead of Canelo Alvarez in a mega event in Las Vegas.

Next, the winner of 168 would face Canelo at one weight against the winner of the Beterbiev-Bivol II bout, possibly at 170 pounds, in a fight that would determine the best of the five.

The economic factor may not be that crucial in any of these struggles; Turki Alalshikh has money to give to everyone. But I wanted to see Canelo-Bivol again or Morrell or Benavidez again. Plus, the chance to see Beterbiev against any of these three Americans was a plus.

The answer to the initial question could be linked to the interests of the Mexican Saul Alvarez. It’s no secret that Morrel and Benavidez, while fighting at super middleweight, called on Canelo and his team to put on a fight that continues to attract true fans. For some time Morrel and Benavidez were Canelo Alvarez’s mandatory challengers.

On the other hand, Munguía’s crushing defeat against Surace has put another obstacle in the plans that have been drawn on the desks of those who manage boxing plots. The Frenchman left us with the feeling that Jaime Munguía is not what he seemed and that Canelo did not have the power to defeat him in such a strong way. That leaves Canelo Alvarez with a question to resolve, even at super middleweight.

When the boxing fan left aside the interest of seeing the best against the best, the money arrived to help ensure this didn’t happen. And the worst thing is that the fans believed that the fights they were given were the best. And as if that wasn’t enough, the interim graduates made things worse. Today, a fan knows little about the rankings in each weight category. All that matters is seeing the boxer of the moment win not just fights but millions.

There is still good boxing and great fights to see. Of course yes, and in all weight categories! What needs to be done is for everyone to take their place as they did before. Give the fans the fight they want to see, if that happens the event will definitely be a success. We can’t say that athletes don’t deserve what they earn, but they should do it as they should. Show the title the respect it deserves, not only for the title but for those who sacrificed their lives to obtain it.

We don’t mean to say that this isn’t a business sport. It has been since its inception. The art of sweet science could become a brothel where money is exchanged for a place if we stand firm and stick with it.

Morrell and Benavidez will have the opportunity to face each other at a weight they were expected to finish their careers at. However, intermediate interests forced them to migrate to a weight category where two giants like Beterbiev and Bivol did not let anyone pass. They are the best in their category and have to compete against each other.

Meanwhile, in another way, they are spreading notes on some sites where a super middleweight who spent most of his career in middleweight wants to face a welterweight because, according to them, it is the fight that everyone wants to see,… Senseless and irrelevant.

This is the answer to the question: fights in boxing of this era are done out of time or when they no longer make sense. The fans seem to have no interest, and if they do, the blame lies with boxing’s governing bodies for keeping the foolish and uncool, as they are part of the business rather than the sport.

I don’t want to say that I’m not interested in this fight at this weight, nor will I make a prediction on the outcome before February 1st. Like many others, I am a fan and can’t wait to witness what Morrell and Benavidez can accomplish in this weight class.
