Which teams can still use Nolan Arenado?

The Cardinals expected to have traded Nolan Arenado at this point. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak suggested at the winter meetings that a deal could be reached within a week or two. That probably would have been the case if the eight-time All-Star hadn’t used his no-trade clause to stifle talks about a move to the Astros.

That leaves St. Louis in an awkward position. They publicly bought out Arenado. He is apparently willing to waive his no-trade clause under certain circumstances. Whatever the reason, he wasn’t interested in going to Houston last month. Subsequent reports indicated he might consider the Astros in the future, but the team moved on Christian Walker almost immediately and no longer needs a corner interior. The Cardinals need to look elsewhere.

The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Katie Woo reported this week that there has been minimal push on a trade at Arenado since Houston’s talks fell through. The Yankees, long speculative, are apparently not as interested as they first seemed. YES Network’s Jack Curry shot down this idea last week. Jon Heyman also suggested on a Bleacher Report live stream yesterday that the Yankees were more likely to stay DJ LeMahieu rather than chasing Arenado.

Where does Mozeliak and company end up?
