David Morrell angered David Benavidez fans by saying on social media that he only knows how to “eat tacos” and “I can’t speak Spanish.” These comments lit a fire among Benavidez’s fans, who criticized the talented Cuban, saying he would knock him out for his insolence.
Many believe that the “Mexican Monster” will definitely knock Morrell out, but that may not be true. Benavidez has become a different fighter since moving up to 175; its power isn’t there for this weight class.

Light heavyweights are kryptonite for Benavidez. He’s gone from Superman to a medium volume puncher and could have trouble against a true 175 weight like Morrell. The two fighters will meet in 23 days on PBC on Prime Video PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Belly battle
Morrell’s observations about Benavidez’s eating habits were a reaction to his own delicate condition during their first face-to-face. Benavidez had a paunch at the time and looked like a long-haul truck driver, accustomed to eating on the road at greasy food joints. That belly was worse than Tyson Fury’s.
Thankfully, Benavidez appears to have lost weight. Interestingly, it had only been six months since his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 when he began promoting his February 1 fight against Morrell. How on earth could Benavidez gain so much weight in six months? He really has to let himself go between fights to make weight.

Obviously, Benavidez can’t continue to let his body deform like this in the future because he won’t have much of a career if he can’t reach 175 or if he’s forced to drain himself to make weight. He already looked scrawny when he made weight for his debut at 175 last summer, and that was a bad sign.
If Benavidez is already killing himself to make weight at light heavyweight, he won’t be there for long before he’s forced to move up to lightweight and compete against IBF champion Jai Opetaia.
It’s understandable why WBA light heavyweight champion Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) commented on Benavidez’s Spanish because he revealed he was having trouble understanding him. Morrell’s fast delivery prevented Benavidez from following him.
“I’m ready for February 1st. Long live Mexico, guys. Benavidez doesn’t even speak Spanish,” David Morrell said on social media. “He knows how to eat tacos and crap. May the best man win.”
